The French authorities have opened a judicial investigation against the leader of the National Rally, Marine Le Penby suspicions of illegal financing of his campaign following a report from the National Commission of Campaign Accounts, the Paris Prosecutor’s Office reported on Tuesday.
The judicial investigation was opened on July 2 and includes the following charges: loan from legal entity to candidate in election campaign; acceptance by a candidate in a campaign of a loan from a legal entity; misappropriation of property by persons exercising public functions; fraud committed against a public person, as well as forgery and the use of forgery, French media reported, citing judicial sources and the Prosecutor’s Office.
Marine Le Pen, whose National Rally party won the first round of the French elections on June 30, saw its hopes of an absolute majority shattered this Sunday when his far-right formation came in third place in the second round.
