The opening of the first National Museum of the civil war in Spain is stalled

Los disagreements and disputes over the representation of the civil war years in Spain have slowed the development of the country’s first national civil war museum.

The Popular Party (PP), and Vox (far-right) control the region of Aragón, in northeastern Spain, where the National Museum of the Battle of Teruel and the Civil war.

The regional government of Aragon opposes the Historical Memory Law of 2022 of the National Socialist Government, which formally condemns the repressions of the Franco regime.

Governments are engaged in a legal battle over the representation of the Franco era after the Aragonese politicians managed to overthrow the Historical Memory Law and replace it with your own version.

Law of Concord

The Law of Concord, which has been adopted by three of the Spanish Autonomous Communities – Aragon, Castilla y León, and Valencia, could affect its obligations regarding human rights and preservation of historical memory.

Although the Spanish Constitutional Court provisionally suspended the Law of Concord of Aragon, local authorities plan to appeal the decision.

Critics of the laws, including the national government and historical memory associations, described them as a attempt to downplay, justify or eradicate the horrors of Francoism.

As legal battles continue, questions have been raised about how the museum will represent the Spanish Civil War and Franco’s past.

Last year, in a victory for the regional government of Aragon, it was announced that a memorial monument on the museum site with the names of those killed in combat I would not distinguish between those who fought for and against of Franco, thus contravening the government’s Historical Memory Law.

In April, The United Nations urged the Spanish Government to take all necessary measures to guarantee strict respect for international standards that govern the preservation of historical memory of serious human rights violations.
