As reported by the Swedish Armed Forces, the Swedish Air Force intercepted the Russian military plane on Saturday.
The commander of the Swedish Air Force has stated that a Russian military plane violated Swedish airspace on Friday east of Gotland.
“The Russian act is unacceptable and shows a lack of respect for our territorial integrity,” the commander of the Swedish Air Force, Jonas Wikman, published in X.
Sweden formally joined NATO in March as member number 32 of the military alliance transatlantic. With Finland, which joined NATO Last year, it abandoned the military neutrality that was a hallmark of Nordic states’ foreign policy during the Cold War after Russia invaded Ukraine in early 2022.
With this decision, the Nordic country put end to decades of neutrality after World War II centuries of non-alignment with the great powers, at a time when the security concerns in Europe have been shot after the ukrainian war.
