Russia orders the arrest of the widow of opposition leader Alexei Navalny

Yulia Navalnaia, who lives abroad, could be arrested if she returns to Russia, where the Kremlin is cracking down on the opposition.

A Russian court this Tuesday ordered the arrest in absentia of the widow of the Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalnywithin the framework of a broad Kremlin campaign against the opposition.

The Basmanny district court in Moscow decided to arrest Yulia Navalnaiawho lives abroad, accused of alleged participation in an extremist group.

Navalni, the staunchest political enemy of Russian President Vladimir Putin died in February in an Arctic prison while serving a 19-year sentence on extremism charges that Navalny considered politically motivated.

Authorities said he became ill after a walk, but did not provide further details. Navalny he was imprisoned after returning to Moscow in January 2021 from Germany, where he was recovering from nerve agent poisoning in 2020which he blamed on the Kremlin.

Navalnaia accused Putin of her husband’s death and has promised to continue its activities. Russian authorities they deny his involvement in the poisoning and death of the opposition leader.

Its spokesperson, Kira Yarmysh, in a post on the social network X, described the court’s ruling as a recognition of Navalnaia’s “merits”.
