Poland and Ukraine sign “unprecedented” military agreement

kyiv has committed to Explore new ways to shoot down all the missiles and Russian drones in Ukrainian airspace heading towards Poland along with Warsaw, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Monday.

Zelensky shared the news of the security agreement in a post on X, saying that the “unprecedented document” it also includes the formation and training of a new Ukrainian military unit of volunteers, the Ukrainian Legion, on Polish territory.

“Thank you for your solidarity with our country and our people, and for all your support and help“, says Zelenski.

The Ukrainian leader met in Warsaw with the Polish Prime Minister, Donald Tusk, to discuss Russia’s continued attacks on Ukraine and greater support from NATO.

On Tuesday, the military alliance will hold its summit in Washington, where leaders are expected explore methods to provide long-term help in terms of security and military training to Ukraine, more than two years after the Russian invasion.

NATO will take on greater responsibility

The talks took place hours after Russian missiles will kill at least 24 people in attacks against several places in Ukraine, including a children’s hospital in the capital.

At the NATO summit, Poland will be represented by President Andrzej Duda, who had planned to meet with Zelensky late on Monday.

Poland is one of the staunchest defenders of Ukraine and will spend 4.12% of its GDP on Defense this year, according to estimates published by NATO, double the 2% established by the Alliance.

One of the initiatives likely to be approved at the three-day summit is for NATO to assume greater responsibility for coordination of training and military and financial assistance to Ukrainian forces, instead of the United States.

Europeans are also debating giving Ukrainians a greater presence in NATO bodiesalthough there is still no consensus on kyiv’s incorporation into the Western alliance.
