Mitsotakis’ new Cabinet intends to focus on labor policies and the cost of living.
The Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakisintroduced important changes in its Government team this Friday with the focus on the labor policies and of cost of living after the victory of his center-right party in the european electionswhich was loose but with a lower result than 2019.
Despite a recent decline in inflation, surveys consistently show that the main concern of most of the greeks is he cost of livingsince the pandemic and the Russia’s war against Ukraine contributed to the increase in prices in the southern European country.
Takis Theodorikakos59 years old, who previously held the Interior and Public Order portfolios, will head the Ministry of Developmentwhich is largely responsible for monitoring prices of consumption.
New Democracy widens its lead over Syriza, although it loses votes amid low turnout
The match New Democracy (ND) of Mitsotakis achieved a baggy first place in the elections to the European Parliament on June 9, obtaining the 28.3% of the votesalmost double the 14.9% of the main left-wing opposition party, Syriza.
Although that widened the lead achieved by ND over Syriza in the previous European elections, it was considered a lackluster result for the ruling party, which fell almost five percentage points compared to its 2019 result. Participation was low: Almost 6 out of 10 voters abstained and marginal right-wing parties recorded gains.
Mitsotakis also replaced his ministers of Job, Interior y Agricultureand appointed former Defense Minister Nikos Panagiotopoulos to replace the Minister of Migration, Dimitris Kairidis. Greece is a key entry point for thousands of migrants seeking a better life in the European Union. Most arrive by small boat from Türkiye, but arrivals have declined in recent years.
The key portfolios of Finance, Foreign Affairs y Defending they remained without changes. The new ministers are formally sworn in this Friday and the first Cabinet meeting will take place on Saturday.
Mitsotakis came to power in 2019after more than four years of Syriza government during the country’s financial crisis, and was re-elected with a landslide victory in summer 2023.
