France reacts to the results of the first round of legislative elections, in which the far-right National Rally party gained a strong lead with around a third of the votes.
On the streets of the French capital, many Parisians express their disappointment for the result. It is the case of Caroline Beaulieu38: “In both cases, it’s really about over o anger. There is nothing better between the two. So here we are, disappointed and we don’t know where we’re going.”
Some also criticize the Macron’s decision to call early elections. Jean Christophe Nony59, explains the reasons: “I think that the President of the Republic should have accepted at least the maximum period of 40 days, because if we rush to hold elections, if we want to destabilize the people, we run the risk of ending an ungovernable assembly, and we can’t. We won’t dissolve it for a year. So there’s no rush, there is no campaign and that is the responsibility of Emmanuel Macron“.
Although poll projections suggest that the National Rally will have the most seats in the next National Assembly, It is not clear whether he will obtain an absolute majority of 289 of the 577 seats.
The sadness of the Minister of Economy and Finance
But the Minister of Economy and Finance of France, Bruno Le Maireseems to have already accepted the defeat of his government: “It is a defeat. It is a defeat for our (presidential) majority, a defeat for our (political) camp. It is a historic moment of reorganization of the political forces in our country and it makes me very sad”.
Meanwhile, the atmosphere is considerably more positive on the side of the far-right leader Marine Le Pen.
