It is the first time in United States history that a president faces a former president in a presidential debate.
More than four years have passed since the last election debate between Democrat Joe Biden and Republican Donald J. Trump. This Thursday, the two rivals will face each other again in a meeting that will be anything but boring.
President Biden has now been in power for four years after winning the last presidential electionseven though former President Trump I didn’t want to accept the results. The Republican said in an interview in May with the ‘Milwaukee Journal Sentinel’ that this time he does not intend to unconditionally accept the results of the elections, and that he would only do so if “everything is honest.”
The images from that January 6, 2021, when Trump supporters stormed the Capitol in Washington DChave not yet disappeared from the minds of Americans, but the circumstances for this debate have nevertheless changed.
A great opportunity for both campaigns
The first presidential debate of 2024 offers the two candidates the rare and great opportunity to change the course of a race that, until now, It has been defined by its stability.
With little mutual respect between the two, expect a meeting filled with hostility and accusations during the 90 minutes that the debate will last which will be broadcast on ‘CNN’. In the previous days, Biden has focused on his plans for the country, very different from those of his Republican rival, as Trump continues to attack Biden’s record.
Analysts’ eyes will be on Trump’s comments this Thursday, while with Biden, his performance will be key to the result, due to accusations of his alleged mental deterioration in recent years.
