The EU gives the definitive green light to the Nature Restoration Plan

This Monday, the countries of the European Union gave their final approval to the Nature Restoration Plan after months of blockades and disagreements.

After surviving a very close vote by lawmakers last summer, the so-called Nature Restoration Plan faced the opposition from several member states for months amid incessant farmer protests that helped put the bill on hold. Deadpoint.

The law, which aims restore ecosystems, species y habitats in the UEwas finally adopted in a meeting of environment ministers in Luxembourg, after gathering the necessary support from a qualified majority that represents 15 of the 27 Member States and 65% of the population of the EU.

“This is the last step before this law can come into force,” said the Belgian presidency of the EU Council.

The restoration plan is part of the Green Deal of the EU, which seeks to establish the most ambitious climate and biodiversity objectives in the world, and turn the bloc into the global reference point on all climate issues.

According to the plan, Member States will have to meet targets for the restoration of specific habitats and species, to cover at least 20% of land and marine areas of the region for 2030.
