The urgency is palpable in the joint statement issued by Qatar, the US and Egypt: “There is no more time to lose, and no excuses from any side for further delays.” This call reflects the growing international concern about the prolongation of the conflict and its devastating humanitarian consequences.

In a positive development, the Israeli prime minister’s office, Benjamin Netanyahu has accepted the invitation to participate in these conversations. However, an official response from Hamas is still awaitedwhich adds an element of uncertainty to the process.

When will the next negotiations be?

Negotiations are scheduled for August 15, with Doha or Cairo as possible venues. According to diplomatic sources, only “four or five areas of disagreement” remain to be resolved between the parties, suggesting significant progress in previous negotiations.

A central theme in these discussions is the exchange of Palestinian prisoners and Israeli hostagesa delicate matter that requires careful negotiation. Mediators say they have a proposal ready to address outstanding issues, which could speed up the process toward an agreement.

The conflict, which broke out on October 7 last year following an attack by Hamas-led militants that claimed the lives of approximately 1,200 people in Israel, has resulted in an Israeli offensive in Gaza with a tragic death toll of almost 40,000 Palestinian victims.

The recent removal of atop Hamas leader in Tehran has added tension to the regional landscape, threatening to derail peace efforts. Nevertheless, US officials remain hopeful that Hamas can continue negotiations under the leadership of Yahya Sinwarwho has assumed political command of the group.
