With the votes of the five PNV deputies, the Popular Party will be able to move forward with its non-legal proposal to demand that the Socialist Government recognize Edmundo González Urrutia as president of Venezuela.
The Congress of Deputies of Spain will recognize Edmundo González Urrutia in a vote on Wednesday as elected president of Venezuelaafter the Basque Nationalist Party (PNV) has confirmed that its five deputies will vote in favor of the non-law proposal of the Popular Party (PP), which now has the support of 177 deputies.
The PP initiative, which is debated on Tuesday in plenary, demands the socialist government to recognize the Venezuelan opposition leader as president of Venezuela. At the moment, it is supported by the deputies of the PP, Vox, UPN, Canarian Coalition and the PNV, but it is still unknown what the position of the PSOE will be.
The PNV spokesperson, Aitor Esteban, assured during a press conference on Tuesday that he understands that the Government has not taken sides with Edmundo González, but he also said that it is evident “that there has been the victory of the opposition while Maduro has not reliably done anything to prove the opposite.“.
Thousands of Venezuelans residing in Spain are expected to go to the Congress of Deputies this Tuesday in the afternoon to demand the same from the Government: that it recognize González Urrutia as president-elect. Through a message on X, opposition leader María Corina Machado asked Venezuelans to join the demonstration in Madrid.
Also on Tuesday, a group of 45 member countries of the UN asked before the Human Rights Council that Venezuela “end the wave of repression” against political opponents and protesters.
The PP’s criticism of Sánchez
Gonzalez Urrutia has been in Spain since Sunday after requesting political asylum from the Spanish Government. The Venezuelan is scheduled to meet with the president of the socialist Executive, Pedro Sánchez, once the visit to Beijing is over.
Sánchez has defended the reception of the opposition leader, who came to Spain aboard a plane of the Spanish Armed Forces, as “a gesture of humanity” after receiving a shower of criticism from the Popular Party for not having recognized the victory of the Venezuelan opposition.
The PNV spokesperson lamented during his appearance on Tuesday that Venezuela “unfortunately” is being used as political weapon in the fight between the PP and the PSOE and asked to raise the issue of the “internal political struggle.”
