According to data published on August 30 by Eurostatin July 2024 some 13,108 million people in the EUof which 10,990 million are in the eurozone.
The EU has 13,108 million unemployed, according to Eurostat. Compared to June this year, unemployment fell by 82,000 in the EU and 114,000 in the eurozone. Compared to July 2023, unemployment decreased by 72,000 in the EU and by 190,000 in the eurozone.
Youth unemployment
In a further breakdown, Eurostatpresented youth unemployment throughout the continent.
In July 20242,818 million young people (under 25 years of age) were unemployed in the EU, of which 2,263 million were in the eurozone. In July 2024, the youth unemployment rate was 14.5% in the EU, up from 14.6% in June 2024, and 14.2% in the eurozone, down from 14.4% the previous month. .
Compared to June 2024, youth unemployment decreased by 25,000 in the EU and by 37,000 in the eurozone. Compared to July 2023, youth unemployment increased by 8,000 in the EU, while it decreased by 66,000 in the eurozone.
Registered strike of refugees from Ukraine
Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, all those who fled the conflict were welcomed into the EU under the EU temporary protection scheme.

“Eurostat invited the EU Member States and the countries of the European Free Trade Association to provide data on people fleeing war in Ukraine regarding their situation on the labor market. In particular, monthly data was collected on refugees who are registered as unemployed in the national public employment services,” Eurostat explained in the data release.
He noted that since March 2022, different countries have been able to provide data on registered unemployed refugees.
“By March 2022, data is only available for 14 EU member states and Switzerland. Coverage increased to 21 EU Member States and Switzerland by May and June 2024, while data for some of these countries was not yet available for July 2024. The data only covers people registered in the national public employment services and not necessarily all people looking for work at a given time,” Eurostat added.
Ukraine in the European Union in figures
In July 2024, 277,000 refugees of Ukraine were registered as unemployed in the 19 countries that provided data to Eurostat.

Eurostat also noted that most countries provided not only total figures but also information on age and sex. “Of the unemployed refugees from Ukraine registered in July 2024 for whom information on age and sex was available, 168,000 were women 25 years or olderwhile 78,000 were men 25 years or older. In addition, 30,000 people under 25 years of age were registered as unemployed in July 2024,” adds Eurostat.
