The Court of Appeal of Florence (north) this Tuesday sentenced the doctor and former Fiorentina sports advisor Giorgio Galanti to one year in prison for the death of the footballer Davide Astori, who died in March 2018 due to cardiac arrest.
Galanti, former director of sports medicine at the Careggi hospital in Florence, had been accused of involuntary manslaughter for giving the player two certificates of “suitable competence” to play in the A league.
Astori, captain of the team at that time, died at the age of 31 from arrhythmogenic ventricular cardiomyopathy, a pathology that was not diagnosed.
The autopsy confirmed the death of the defender due to “a significant process of slowing of the heartbeat that occurred on the night between Saturday, March 3 and Sunday, March 4,” 2018.
