Branyas was listed by the Gerontological Research Group as the oldest known person in the world following the death of French nun Lucile Randon last year.
The oldest person in the world has died at 117 years old. María Branyas Morera, Spanish born in the United States, died in his sleepas reported by his family.
In a post on Branyas’ X account, her family wrote in Catalan: “María Branyas has left us. She has gone as she wanted: sleeping, in peace and without pain“.
He Gerontological Research Groupwhich validates data on people believed to be 110 years old or older, included Branyas on the list of the world’s oldest known people following the death of the French nun Lucile Randon last year.
After living a few years in New Orleans, where his father founded a magazineher family returned to Spain when she was little. Branyas said she had memories of crossing the Atlantic Ocean during the World War I. Her account X is called ‘Super Catalan grandmother’ and has the description: “I am old, very old, but not stupid”.
At 113 years old, Branyas tested positive for COVID-19 during the global pandemic, but avoided developing serious symptoms which claimed tens of thousands of elderly Spaniards.
At the time of his death, he was living in a nursing home in the Catalan town of Olot. Her family has explained that her ‘supergrandmother’ told them days before her death: “I don’t know when, but very soon this long journey will come to an end. Death will find me exhausted from having lived so long, but I want to face it with a smile, feeling free and satisfied“.
The next oldest person on the Gerontological Research Group list is Japanese Tomiko Itooka, what has 116 years.
According to known records, the oldest person in the world was Jeanne Louise Calmenta French woman who died in 1997 at the age of 122 years and 164 days.
