Spain and Gambia sign a collaboration agreement for migration control

After the pact reached with Mauritania, Spain has managed to close another collaboration agreement with Gambia to control illegal migration to the Canary Islands.

The Spanish president, Pedro Sánchez, has announced that Spain will sign a series of association agreements with the Gambia aimed at stopping the increase in immigrants arriving in the Canary Islands from West Africa.

“Our countries will sign a memorandum of understanding on circular migration. “This new initiative aims to facilitate safe, orderly and regular migration that benefits both our countries and our citizens.”

Sánchez’s visit to Gambia It is part of his three-day tour of West Africa, during which he hopes to strengthen bilateral relations with Mauritania, Gambia and Senegal.

These three African coastal nations have become the main exit points for migrants who are trying to reach the Canary Islands, where, according to the Spanish Ministry of the Interior, more than 22,000 people have arrived since January.

Sánchez reached a agreement with the president of Mauritania, Mohamed Ould Ghazouaniearlier this week to renew cooperation between their countries’ security forces to combat human trafficking.
