More inspections of nuclear power plants in Ukraine and Russia The director of the United Nations nuclear control body Rafael Grossi assured Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky that they will increase nuclear security assistance to Ukraine.
During his visit to the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelenkithe head of the United Nations nuclear oversight body Rafael Grossi explained that it will expand its inspections to include electrical substations that supply energy to Ukraine’s power plants.
Grossi explained that “Some of the, not central, but some of the power lines have been affected. And we already indicated at that time that this was a risk for the plant (from Zaporizhzhia). Therefore, the IAEA could or should also be looking at the substations, the critical substations in the country, which have been subjected to pressure or attacks“.
Without electricity it is not possible to cool the active areas of the reactors
This comes after Russian bombing raids reportedly damaged power lines leading to the central in Zaporyiaaccording to the Ukrainian power plant’s energy producer, Energoatom. The Ukrainian company assures that the risks are high: “In case of damage to the second line that connects the plant with the Ukrainian electrical system, an emergency situation would occur due to the loss of external supply to the pumps that cool the active zones of the reactors and the fuel storage pools“.
