Representatives of the coalition government Giorgia Meloni have welcomed the news of the resignation of the Italian Minister of Culture, Gennaro Sangiuliano: “He is finally free and can show that he is a respectable person”, were the words of the Deputy Prime Minister Antonio Tajani. But according to Democratic party leader Elly Schlein, Sangiuliano should have resigned sooner.

Although the Italian Minister of Culture has already been replaced, this is the first significant change in Meloni’s cabinet after two years in power.

What has led Meloni to make this decision has been the lack of clarity around the amount of information that the supposed advisor to the Minister of Culture had on sensitive topics such as the next Culture summit of the group of seven.

Concerns have been raised about possible violations of security measures of the meeting, as well as the impact this could have on Italy’s credibility on the international stage and on the credibility of the Meloni government.

Approval ratings for the prime minister’s leadership remain high, and Meloni recently reminded her inner circle that at this point no mistakes are allowed.

In a speech given On Saturday at the Cernobbio International Forum, the Italian prime minister described the issue as a private matter that had aroused public interest.
