An official Palestinian source indicated that Hamas would not participate in Thursday’s talks, but that his leaders residing in Qatar are willing to discuss any proposal from the mediatorsas they have done in previous rounds.

An opportunity to avoid further regional escalation of the conflict

And cease-fire in Gaza probably would calm tensions throughout the region and could convince Iran already Hezbollah to refrain from launching attacks of retaliation against Israel after the death of a top commander of the Lebanese Shiite group in an Israeli airstrike and assassination of Hamas political leader in an explosion in Tehran.

The mediators have passed months trying to develop a three-phase plan in which Hamas would release dozens of hostages captured in the October 7 attack that sparked the war, in exchange for a lasting ceasefire, the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza and the release of Palestinians imprisoned by Israel.

Both sides have to some extent accepted the plan, which the American president, Joe Bidenannounced on May 31. But Hamas has proposed “amendments” and Israel has suggested “clarifications”which has led each party to accuse the other of making new demands that it cannot accept.
