The French president has ruled out the option of a Government of this formation in the name of “institutional stability.” On Tuesday, Emmanuel Macron will begin new consultations “with party leaders” and “prominent personalities.”
Dramatic turn of events in what was supposed to be one more day of consultations at the Elysée to determine the possible candidacy of the new prime minister of Franceafter the New Popular Front obtained the greatest number of seats in the legislative elections but did not achieve a sufficient majority to govern alone.
On Friday, Emmanuel Macron received the delegation of New Popular Front and the Republicans and this Monday to the leaders of the National Group. A series of red lines quickly began to emerge. The head of The Republicans, Laurent Wauquiez, declared that his party would vote against any Government with ministers from Insoumise France.
In response to the Jean-Luc Mélenchon’s proposal to form a left-wing governmentresponded that he would vote against. For its part, the New Popular Front announced this Monday that it will only return to the Elysée to discuss with Emmanuel Macron “the modalities of cohabitation” with a Government led by Lucie Castetsin a joint statement with left-wing partners.
A Government of the New Popular Front is not possible
There is already a verdict from the Elysée tenant: a Government based solely on the program and parties of the New Popular Front “would be immediately censored by all other groups represented in the National Assembly”.

The reactions of the components of the New Popular Front were immediate. Jean-Luc Mélenchon called for a “popular and political response…quick and firm” to what he described as “exceptionally serious situation“created, in his opinion, by the president.
The leader of Rebellious France He also announced that he would present a “motion of censure” against the head of state, while promising block a right-wing government “when the time comes.”
Finally, in the evening, Fabien Roussel, national secretary of the French Communist Partycalled for “rallies” and “a great popular mobilization” to counteract the head of state.
He also ruled out the possibility that the New Popular Front participate in new consultations with the Elysée if the objective is “to form a Government that continues the policies of the outgoing Government.”
