The EU High Representative continues his visit to the Eastern European region just weeks before the end of his mandate. The strong trade ties between Kyrgyzstan and the EU are confirmed.
The High Representative for foreign policy of the EU, Joseph Borrellmet in Bishkek with Kyrgyz President Sadyr Khaparov to strengthen the EU’s bilateral cooperation with Kyrgyzstan ahead of the change of mandate and the arrival of Kallas to the EU post.
During the talks, both addressed the possibility of closer cooperation in the fields of trade, economy and investment, in particular participation of European investors in the Kyrgyz projects ongoing in the hydroelectric and transportation sectors.
Borrell stated that the expanded partnership and cooperation agreement signed with Kyrgyzstan earlier this year paved the way for this collaboration. Borrell also met with the Kyrgyz Foreign Minister, Zheenbek Kulubayev, with whom he discussed the next steps to deepen EU ties with Central Asia.
Borrell’s visit after the trip to Kazakhstan
Borrell’s trip to Kyrgyzstan follows a visit similar to Kazakhstan as part of the EU’s attempt to develop ties with the region. “We have discussed the main political and economic reforms in Kazakhstan and issues of mutual interest in the difficult geopolitical context.”
We appreciate Kazakhstan’s principled support for the United Nations Charter and its commitment to international law,” Borrell wrote after the meeting with President Qasym-Jomart Toqaev.
