Turkish authorities have blocked access to the Meta group’s platform following accusations that it blocked content posted by users in memory of the slain Hamas leader in Iran.
Türkiye has blocked access to Instagram without explanation, in the context of a series of censorship accusations against the American platform by a senior Turkish official.
The Turkish Information and Communications Technology Authority (BTK) published a measure on its website stating that “Instagram.com was blocked by decision made on August 2, 2024“, without further details.
On Wednesday, the Turkish presidency’s communications director, Fahrettin Altun, had harshly criticized the platform, saying that it “prevents people from posting messages of condolence for the martyrdom of Haniyeh“and denouncing about very clear and obvious attempt at censorship“. Many users residing in Turkey have reported on X that they are unable to update their Instagram feed.
This blockade coincides with the day decreed by Erdogan as a day of national mourning to show support for the Palestine cause and our solidarity with our Palestinian brothers.
