Maybe in their prime time fight Julio Cesar Chavez Snr will be able to defeat Robert Garcia and force him to submit.

Not 30 years later, not when protecting one of his erratic sons. And not even in Mexico.

In a locker room showdown between the odds-on favorite for Trainer of the Year and a Mexican fighting legend. It was Garcia who declared victory over Chavez. The hostile Sneer is adamant that Garcia’s trainer Misael “Chino” Rodriguez (14-0, 7 KO) will not risk his unbeaten record while traveling. Pachuca, Mexico, to fight Chavez Snr.’s overweight son, journeyman Omar Chavez (41-8-1, 28 KO).

Omar Chavez is required to fight at 168 pounds as scheduled. The weight limit must be met the next day. But Chavez was more than eight pounds heavier than that number. This caused Garcia to dig in and say his boxer Rodriguez would not fight.

in a video interview summarizing the incident. Garcia said at one point he was threatened with arrest for not sending fighters to the ring. At the same time, he also heard from the elder Chavez.

“Only in Mexico can you get arrested for not fighting,” former 140-pound champion Chris Algieri said on Monday’s episode of ProBox TV’s “Top Stories.”

Algieri said he found the debate between Garcia and Chavez Snr more interesting than the canceled fight given their individual reputations. Garcia had previously trained with Algieri.

“He doesn’t care … he protects his fighters,” Algieri said of Garcia keeping super flyweight Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez, Virgil Ortiz heavyweights. Unbeaten junior-middleweight, 140-pound champion Jose “Rayo” Valenzuela and former boxer 140-pound champion Jose Ramirez in a gym in Riverside, California.

“If (Garcia) had a funny feeling that something was wrong. He had no problem walking away. You can’t bully someone like Robert Garcia, who’s been around a long time and is a former world champion. When considering becoming Trainer of the Year He cares about his accusations.”

Meanwhile The “Top Stories” panel focused on Chavez Snr’s disgust at his son being overweight. who is the younger brother of the notoriously careless Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.

“As far as the Chavez kids, there was always drama, being late and being really heavy. That doesn’t surprise me. These are the kinds of things that usually happen to the Chavez boys.”

Former welterweight champion Pauli Malinacki said Garcia’s confidence in keeping his fighters safe shines through now.

Malignaggi said other trainers will put their fighters in the ring with Omar Chavez to make sure the money is in their pockets.

“People like Robert Garcia deserve more credit than you think,” given the trend toward ensuring everyone is paid, Malignaggi said.

On the other hand….

“This man’s son is living a life of nothing,” Malignaggi said of Chavez Snr. “Stop eating, man! You’re making fun of the last name. In fact, (the seniors) are arguing about it. He did it to his son when he should have stuck a boot up his son’s butt.”

Malignaggi said missing the weight test on the second day sucked “a banana… but it didn’t surprise me. They appeared like lumps of fat all over.”

However, “Top Story” analyst Timothy Bradley Jr. said Chavez’s weight loss likely would be enough to make the fight happen.

“This (thing) was soft,” Bradley said of Rodriguez’s withdrawal. “It’s not like it never happened.”

Fighters don’t always have to limit their weight on day two, and in some cases, fighters will rehydrate more than 20 pounds from their previous day’s weight while standing on the scale.

“Nobody told (Chavez) to sign the contract … when they said there were conditions for rehydration. You will know if you are too full,” Malinacki argued. “What are we doing here? Why is Dad upset with Robert Garcia?

“Good thing Robert. Garcia is there. “He understands the culture,” Algieri said. “Robert has a child.”
