EU mobilizes emergency support for Greece and Albania after devastating fires

The aid comes shortly after the bloc of 27 announced that an additional €600 million will be injected into the Civil Protection Mechanism in response to the growing number of forest fires across Europe.

The European Union is mobilizing emergency support for Greece and Albania, which have been fighting serious forest fires for several days. Support to Greece will consist of both aerial and ground firefighting resources, which will be provided by other European countries under the EU Civil Protection Mechanism.

“As regards to the region of Attica in Greecethe Commission has deployed two firefighting teams from Italya helicopter from France and another helicopter from Serbia,” said European Commission spokesman Balazs Ujvari.

“We are also sending ground forces from five European countries, including the Czech Republic, France, Italy, Serbia and Romania. And, more importantly, this joins the firefighters who had already been positioned in Greece at the beginning of the season,” he added.

Europe’s help is key to putting out the fires

Albania will receive a multipurpose military aircraft from Romania that can transport up to six tons of water. The authorities of Albania and Greece activated the EU Civil Protection Mechanism after they had difficulties controlling the flames that are devastating the northern suburbs of Athens and the southern region of Albania.

The aid comes shortly after the EU announced that An additional 600 million euros will be injected in the Civil Protection Mechanism in response to the increasing number of forest fires throughout Europe.
