Mourners from the Druze community paraded through the streets of Majdal Shams after the attack on a football field that Saturday caused the death of at least 12 children and injuries to more than 30.
Posters and black ribbons in memory of the 12 children and young people who died they stuck to a fence where it was produced the deadly explosion, in a somber scene. The rocket attack was the deadliest on Israel’s northern border since fighting began between Israel and the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah.
Israel has blamed Hezbollah for the incident, and the first Israeli Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, has said the militant group “will pay a high price.” Hezbollah responded that had attacked a military base in the Golan Heights in retaliation because of the Israeli attacks against a Lebanese town, but denied being behind the attack on the soccer field.
The attack has raised fears an escalation of the conflict in the region between both groups, and the White House National Security Council has stated that it is working on a diplomatic solution to “end all attacks once and for all” in the border area between Israel and Lebanon.
Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon have killed more than 450 people since early October, including members of Hezbollah and about 90 civilians and non-combatants.
Officials from several countries, including the United States and France, have visited Lebanon to try to ease tensions between Israel and Hezbollah, but they have not made much progresssince the militant group refuses to stop shooting until the Israeli offensive in Gaza ends. Israel and Hamas are weighing a ceasefire proposal that would ease 10 months of violence between Israel and Hamas in Gaza and free some 110 captive hostages.
