Jesse Marsch, Canada coach did not spare praise this Monday for Argentinahis rival this Tuesday in the Copa América semifinal, and said that they will not man-mark Lionel Messi.
“We didn’t do well enough with Messi in the previous match (the opening match of the tournament). He was able to run too freely towards our goalkeeper. We won’t man-mark him (in the semi-final), but he will certainly be a emphasis on how we will defend and our ability to follow him will be very important,” he said at a press conference at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, which will host the semifinal this Tuesday.
“We have certain things that we will try to do to make it difficult for him. We know that limiting his space is the number one priority. But we all know that he is the best to ever play football. With the respect we have for him, it is always a privilege to play against “A player like him and our players are looking forward to it. They will be excited and the challenge is great. We will see if we can do a little better than the first game,” he added.
After sending Venezuela home on penalties in the quarterfinals, Canada seeks this Tuesday to make a splash and also get revenge against Argentina, which defeated them 2-0 in the opening match of this Copa América.
The Albiceleste, clear favorite in this semi-final and who will foreseeably have most of the fans in the stadium on their side, won that match 2-0 with goals from Julián Álvarez and Lautaro Martínez, but Canada left promising sensations despite to defeat.
“I don’t want to reveal too much about our game plan, but we will have to be very good,” Marsch said.
“We will have to be very compact. We will have to make sure we limit their spaces, with the ball we will have to play with security and we will have to be dynamic and use our speed and power,” he argued.
