New day of anti-government protests in Jerusalem, where protesters have once again called for general elections to be held and an agreement to be reached to bring home the Israeli hostages that remain in the hands of Hamas militiamen in the Gaza Strip. According to local reports, around 100,000 people took part in the demonstration, which saw clashes between police and protesters near the home of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
More than 100 hostages were exchanged for Palestinian citizens who were imprisoned in Israeli jails, during a Stop the fire reached in November of last year. However, since then, the possibility of achieving a new truce between Israel and Hamas, remains deadlocked.
Dissolution of Israel’s war cabinet
Meanwhile, political movements continue in the Government of Benjamin Netanyahu. The first Minister dissolved his war cabinet on Mondaycomposed of three members, after the departure of Benny Gantz, a centrist former military chief who did not agree with the Israeli leader’s management of the armed conflict.
The move has made Netanyahu more dependent on his ultra-nationalist allies, who oppose a ceasefire. This, in turn, could pose an additional challenge at now fragile negotiations to end the war started eight months ago in the Gaza Strip.
