Turki Al-Shiekh says the result of Tyson Fury’s first fight against Oleksandr Usyk would have been “different” if the Gyspy King’s father, John Fury, wasn’t in his corner between rounds.
SugarHill and John Fury told Tyson to do things that were not effective due to his age, slow movements and colossal size. John’s advice was not the problem. When you have a limited old fighter, even perfect instructions do not help.
Fury looked like a dinosaur who was outmaneuvered by the faster and more agile Usyk. SugaHill and John’s instructions in his corner were absolutely useless to him.
Was John a distraction?
John Fury was just there, giving simple instructions, and he didn’t talk much. It sounded level in the corner.
If anything, John was the only positive voice in Fury’s corner that night because SugarHill Steward didn’t seem like much help. He looked like someone who was panicking when things got worse for Tyson.
Tyson’s real problem was Usyk’s talent. He wasn’t good enough to land his shots on him, and he looked mentally weak once the talented Ukrainian hurt him in the ninth round.
Looking back on the fight, it didn’t look like Tyson was paying attention to his father, John Fury, between rounds. He always looked and listened to his trainer, SugarHill Steward, for directions.
Fury’s real problem was his inability to handle body shots from Usyk, which led him to struggle with the ropes. Tyson’s mobility was not there for this fight. It seemed that age had caught up with him, preventing him from fighting in the center of the ring.
Fury (34-2-1, 24 KOs) lost the first fight by a split decision in 12 rounds to Usyk (23-0, 14 KOs) on May 18, 2024.
“Fury-Usyk, the lack of atmosphere, I feel that prevented him in the final two or three rounds. I feel that it could be different if it was in Wembley (Stadium) in England. Maybe Tyson would have listened,” said Carl Froch on his YouTube channel on his belief that Tyson Fury would have beaten Oleksandr Usyk in his first fight on May 18, 2024 if the contest had been held in London, England.
“It would have been different if his father wasn’t in the corner,” he said Turki Al-Shiekh about Tyson’s father, John Fury, being in the corner during the first Fury-Usyk fight.
John looked harmless enough in the corner during the first fight. Some fans believe that John gave instructions that conflicted with what SugarHill Steward told him during the fight, but it was more a situation of Tyson not having the talent to do what he was told.
