On Saturday night Canelo Alvarez successfully defended his unified super middleweight crown against Edgar Berlanga. The fight ended up being a complete and utter mismatch as many expected.
Canelo was simply too smart, too skilled, too cunning, too consistent and too experienced for Berlanga. To his credit, Berlanga put in a brave and admirable effort, but he was no match for Canelo.
Since losing to Dmitry Bivol in May 2022, Canelo hasn’t been involved in many fights that have fans particularly excited. The most interesting matchup was his third fight against Golovkin, but by that point GGG was aging and on the slide. After that win, Canelo beat Jon Ryder, the undisputed 154-pound champion Jermell Charlo, Jaime Munguia, and most recently the win against Berlanga.
After his victory against Berlanga, on the DAZN broadcast they suggested three logical options for Canelo’s next opponent: Terence Crawford, Dmitry Bivol and David Benavidez.

Benavidez is the fight that many fans have wanted for years, but for various reasons it has not come together, and that seems unlikely to change soon. A potential rematch against Bivol is something Canelo has expressed interest in, as long as Bivol wins his next match on October 12 against Artur Beterbiev which will be for the undisputed lightweight crown. A fight between Canelo and Crawford is something that Turki Al-Sheikh expressed interest in, until he apparently lost interest after hearing Canelo’s demands, but this is a fight that Crawford still wants, despite the fact that he doesn’t have never fought at 160 and not only 168. and Crawford only had one fight at 154.
