Tim Bradley wants former two-division world champion Devin Haney to return to Mexico, where he began his professional career in 2015. Haney (31-0, 15 KOs) has fought 10 times against low-level opposition in Tijuana, Mexico, before coming to the United States
Haney lost to Ryan Garcia via a 12-round majority decision on April 20, and he looked weak in the chin department. His power was also weak. Unfortunately, those things don’t change when Devin, 26, returns to Mexico to fight against second- and third-tier opposition.
Humble Pie in Tijuana?
Bradley fails to notice that Haney wants a lot of money for his fights now, as he and his father, Bill, feel that they are coming. They want the biggest paydays from fighting in the United States against top level opposition. They don’t want to take a dramatic pay cut fighting in Mexico. I don’t see it realistically.
Once fighters start making millions from their fights, they don’t want to go back to making a chump change, like they did when they started their careers. Also, they punch hard in Mexico as well, and those fighters will be targeted Haney’s glass chin from the jump, looking to capitalize on what Ryan Garcia exposed.
“Devin Haney, you wanna go back? Go back to your roots, bro,” Tim Bradley said Xgiving some pearls of wisdom to the slightly beaten Devin Haney. “Go back to where you started. Where did you start? You started in Mexico. Go back and get one of those guys out of there, man.
“Come back here and start here. Take some of that humble pie. Go back to where you started. If you go back to where you started, I’m telling you. You’re going to come back to the top,” Bradley said.
Haney’s chin is not strong enough to take big hits from fighters in the sport. Going back to Mexico will not magically solve this problem. One can only imagine what a Mexican slugger like Oscar Duarte would do to Devin if given the opportunity to fight him.
If it was that easy for fighters to fix their careers by fighting in Mexico, everyone would have it. That’s not how it works. The only thing Haney has to do to get back to Tijuana, Mexico is to fill out his resume like he did before.
