Cole showed the credentials that led him to win the Cy Young Award last season, and he was on the mound for seven innings Thursday in which they allowed him six hits and one run while striking out four.
In his two appearances during this series against the Royals, Kohli pitched four runs and eight strikeouts in 12 innings, giving the Yankees a chance to win each of those games.
The Yankees wasted no time in the same first inning, hitting Michael Wacha and scoring a run, tying a double by Venezuelan Kleyber Torres, who advanced to the no-doubt scorer on Dominican Juan Soto’s right fielder.

The game remained uneventful until the top of the fifth inning, when Torres again put the second run on the board for the New Yorkers with a single to right field that Mexican Alex Verdugo took advantage of. .

Torres scored and drove in a run, Soto added an RBI and Verdugo stepped to the plate on one occasion to contribute to the victory for the Aaron Boone-led team.
