Thai Olympic gold medalist Kamsingh was accused of attempted rape

Thailand’s Somlak Kamsingh, who won the featherweight boxing category at Atlanta ’96 and became the country’s first gold medalist, was sentenced to three years, one month and ten days on Thursday. Jailed after Khon Kaen Province Court convicted him of kidnapping and attempted rape of a teenage girlSomething he denied.

A 17-year-old girl lodged a complaint against 55-year-old Somlak in December 2023. She alleged that the former boxer assaulted her while staying at a hotel in Khon Kaen. “For attempted rape by force (…) for indecent purposes, the acts of the first respondent amount to a single offense in violation of multiple laws,” the court said.

The court granted Kamsingh the right to appeal and set him on bail at 300,000 baht (8,640 euros). He must also pay the equivalent of 4,800 euros in damages.
