Terence Crawford says he’s not “chasing” Canelo Alvarez, as many people believe that’s the reason he’s campaigning for that fight. Four-division world champion Crawford (41-0, 31 KOs) says he sees Canelo as the “the most combative fighter” next to himself and would like to face him.
Not hunting, challenging
Crawford should push for that fight because it allows the two North American fighters to fight in a match that could create interest, make money and entertain the public.
Canelo (62-2-2, 39 KOs) has consistently disappointed fans in the past two years since his loss Dmitri Bivol. People would love to see the Mexican star take on an interesting fight against someone they want to see him fight. Canelo didn’t want to face David Benavidez or David Morrell when they were both at 168.
Has Canelo lost his nerve?
Those fights would have kept Alvarez on top, facing the best, but he’s pulled away and shown no desire to try. You could tell Canelo has lost his nerve and is showing fear by choosing not to take on the challenges he once did.
The second fight with Gennady Golovkin in 2018 was the last time fans saw Alvarez face an opponent where the outcome was not tilted in his favor. People forget that the Bivol fight was considered a sure win for Canelo. The Russian fighter had struggled in a rematch against Craig Richards and looked mediocre against Umar Salamov.
The 37-year-old Crawford would be a smaller risk to Canelo compared to Benavidez or Morrell due to his lack of size, power and age. Still, it’s an excellent fight that Americans and Mexican fans want.
“I wouldn’t say I’m chasing Canelo. I think that’s a broad statement. I just want the opportunity to fight the best fighter in my generation that’s out there,” said Terence Crawford to Social boxing about why he wants to fight Canelo Alvarez.
“He’s the most accomplished fighter in the sport of boxing today, other than myself. I’d just like to fight another great one. That’s all, that’s all. If the fight happens, I think it would be the biggest fight in the sport of boxing today Crawford said about his rationale for wanting to challenge Canelo.
