Shakur Stevenson took to social media to encourage Floyd Schofield ahead of their February 22 fight in Riyadh. WBC lightweight champion Shakur (22-0, 10 KOs) allowed prospect Schofield who didn’t know how to “Quit” his dream after he beat him.
Shakur’s self-deprecating confidence
Normally, this kind of comment is made after a fight is won, but Shakur, all too sure, jumps the gun, consoling the new 22-year-old Schofield before the fight.
It makes sense because Schofield will be a massive underdog in this fight, and his chances of winning will depend on whether he lands a lucky punch or Shakur suffers an injury.
Many fans think that Schofield and his father are just fighting for the $1 million payout, knowing that they can’t win, but they’re just out for the money. That would be pathetic. Schofield didn’t fight anyone of note to get that title.
Schofield’s last five opponents
– René Tellez Giron
– Estuary Serum
– Ricardo Lopez Torres
– Haskell Rhodes
– Jesus Valentine Leone
Those are not world-class fighters, and it is incredible that Schofield was awarded a high ranking by the sanctioning bodies based on victories over fluff opposition. Golden Boy promoter Oscar De La Hoya should have been adamant about not allowing Schofield to fight for a world title, but it’s understandable why he said yes.
The way Schofield saw it in his fight with Giron, dropping out, this cash-out match against Shakur might be as good as it gets for him. If De La Hoya chooses to continue developing Schofield, he will likely be selected by one of the second-tier fighters before he reaches the level of facing the top 15 contenders.
“Don’t leave your dream after this **whooping. You can make it happen one day; tell me, Auntie,” said Shakur Stevenson Xadvising Floyd Schofield before his February 22 fight in Riyadh.
Scashing Out
Shakur tries to mess with Schofield in the build-up, but it doesn’t matter if he’s mentally knocked him out because he’s already out of his league in this fight. You don’t need to psyche yourself out because it’s just a simple prospect.
“We’re going to shock the World … and the NEE,” Schofield said of his fight with Shakur.
I don’t think anyone believes Schofield or his father that they think they will win. Again, they just see this as a money oriented deal for them, going for the quick buck, take the loss, and rinse and repeat with more wins over soft opposition for another unearned title shot.
