Shakur Stevenson sent a message today, letting “The Face of Boxing” Gervonta “Tank” Davis know he won’t be playing A-side matches, and he knows he’s the B-side in negotiations with him. Stevenson (22-0, 10 KOs) says he just wants to make the fight.
Payday chase
This is a strategic move by WBC lightweight champion Shakur. He tells the media that he is not looking to get one “50-50” deals, and knows that it is the B-side. Shakur tries to trap Tank Davis making him look weak in the eyes of the fans and the media.
Stevenson tries to get the fans and the media to help put pressure on Gervonta to embarrass him in a fight. It’s a clever trick, but it shows Shakur’s desperation to get the unification and, more importantly, the payday.
In the same interview, Stevenson said this about Tank: “That’s the fight it is it will make me pay a lot.” He was asked if he would be interested in fighting his friend, Keyshawn Davis, but said he is focused on Tank Davis because he will pay him “a lot.”
That’s why Shakur chased Gervonta night and day for a fight. He wants the payday, and he doesn’t see the same kind of money fighting someone else at lightweight. Also, he could be beaten if he faced someone with a power that could reach his chin. All that talk about Shakur wanting to fight Tank Davis to prove who is the best when the reality is that he just sees him as someone to give him a big payday.
That is why he is in such a hurry and has pursued Gervonta no stop for a fight since 2023. He wants the money and is not willing to earn by fighting a rematch with Edwin De Los Santos or taking his friend, Keyshawn Davis, or Andy Cruz. Instead of winning the Tank Davis fight, Shakur used it round-the-clock method to call him in every interview to push him.
“I’m not going to act like I’m the A side or I deserve 50-50. Let’s negotiate. Let’s see where it goes from there,” Shakur Stevenson told Shawn Porter’s YouTube if youletting Gervonta Davis know that he will not try to get the upper hand in negotiations for a fight. “I know I’m the B side, but we’re fighting,” Stevenson said of Tank Davis.
