Shakur Stevenson and Keyshawn Davis: The friendship that will never be a fight

Shakur Stevenson reiterated this week that he will never fight his good friend, Keyshawn Davis, regardless of what money is offered to him. The WBC lightweight champion says he and Keyshawn went to the gym when they were younger and fought different fighters. They became close.

Stevenson says he and Keyshawn “Take the sport of boxing.“So far, neither of these two fighters has shown the ability to be a major attraction in the sport. Shakur has an outdated and dull Mayweather on his style of the last legs, and Keyshawn has a similar style.

Weight Bully?

The difference with Keyshawn Davis (12-0, 8 KOs) is that he is huge for the lightweight division and without a doubt he should be fighting at 147 instead of 135. He looks massive for a lightweight. If Keyshawn had to fight where he belongs at welterweight against killers like Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennishis career would be worth nothing.

Keyshawn’s promoters at Top Rank never agreed to allow him to fight Boots because his chances of success would be non-existent, and his investment in his career would have been wasted.

Fighting against younger and older kids in the lightweight divisions, Keyshawn has a chance while he’s still young to become a champion but not a star. If he moves to where he should fight at welterweight, he is food for the fighters in this division.

“When we were coming up, me and Keyshawn would go to every gym, and we’d go whip**. We’d go to the gym and fight (fighters) with some regular shit,” Shakur Stevenson told Cigar Talk’s. YouTube channel because he will never fight Keyshawn Davis.

“Every gym. Like a high level. When I went to shoot Lomachenko, Keyshawn was there beating another Olympic gold medalist. Keyshawn was always with me. Once we got to that level, we knew that this day was going to come over.

“It was just a matter of time. We knew we could both whip (fighters) a** and take the sport of boxing back. Now, the fans are going to demand and want to see us fight,” Shakur said of fans starting to push for see him and Keyshawn fight in a division that lacks name fighters at the top.

Undefeated, unproven

Keyshawn failed in the 2020 Olympics, losing to the Cuban Andy Cruz. It was not a close fight. As professionals, Keyshawn and Shakur have yet to beat any high-level fighters. Shakur has defeated several older and smaller fighters, Oscar Valdez and Jamel Herring, but has not faced anyone at the highest level. That’s why he chose to defend against Floyd Schofield. Shakur is desperate.

He was named Vasily Lomachenko and Gervonta Davis, but he didn’t even get a nibble from either of those fighters. One explanation for this is Stevenson’s boring style. He is constantly booed by fans whenever he fights, and has no fanbase outside of his hometown of Newark, New Jersey.

Keyshawn has never wrestled anyone talented during his and has shown zero interest in avenging his four losses to Andy Cruz. He seems interested in taking the easy way out, challenging WBO lightweight champion Denys Berinchyk next month on February 14. Davis says he believes a fight with WBA champion Gervonta Davis will happen when he wins the WBO title. Sounds like a pipe dream.

“It’s not about the money,” Shakur said when told that Turki Al-Sheikh would likely offer him and Keyshawn a lot of money for the two to fight. “It’s not about the money. I’m not one of those (fighters) that the money makes me, bro.

It’s too bad Shakur doesn’t want to fight his friend, Keyshawn, because that might be his best option for a big fight at lightweight. Unless Turki offers Tank Davis mega-millions, that fight won’t happen for Stevenson. Vasily Lomachenko, the IBF lightweight champion, is unlikely to fight Shakur either because he is close to 37 years old, and he does not want to fight a runner in this last stage of his career. If he was younger, Loma would take that fight in a second. Now, however, it doesn’t seem likely.

Once you remove Tank and Lomachenko from the equation, Keyshawn is the only one left for Shakur. There’s William Zepeda, but he’s not going to give Shakur the kind of payoff that a fight against Loma and Gervonta would.

Keyshawn’s career best win

– Nahir Albright: *Close win for Keyshawn. Wounded in the fight
– Miguel Madueno: * The fight looked more like a WWE battle
