Shakur Stevenson wants to use George Kambosos Jr as his next opponent for February after learning WBC #1 contender William Zepeda suffered a right hand injury last Saturday and will not be available to fight next.
After losing the Zepeda fight, Shakur is desperate to get a big name to agree to fight him. He had chased the Zepeda party in a role reversal and counted on that fight happening. However, Zepeda’s injury took him out of the equation for February 22nd.
Zepeda’s loss, Cambosos’ gain?
Stevenson (22-0, 10 KOs) is interested in the fight with former unified lightweight champion Kambosos (21-3, 10 KOs) and wants to know who to contact to start negotiations. Kambosos Jr. just signed a co-promotion deal with Eddie Hearn’s Matchoom Boxing. His other promoter is Lou Dibella.
“Come see me in February in Australia. Drop your belt. Let Zepeda become an email chump, and see me at 140. You know exactly who to contact; I’m right here,” said George Kambosos Jr. Mr X.
Kambosos has a record of 1-3 in his last four fights, and would not be the ideal choice for Shakur to take on if he wants to capture the attention of US fans. A better fight for Shakur would be for Andy Cruz, Floyd Schofield, or Raymond Muratalla.
Kambosos brings the PPV money from Australia, which would be less dangerous for Shakur. If the idea is for Shakur to bring in money from the Aussie PPV in a fight that will allow him to show off his skills, Kambosos would be the ticket. Fighting Cruz, Schofield or Muratalla involved a risk, and Shakur could end up looking bad if he ran away from one of them.
Hearn would need to agree to the idea of making a fight between Shakur and Kambosos because he had said he wanted George to fight then IBF welterweight champion Liam Paro if he is victorious over Richardson Hitchins on December 7. A match between Paro and Kambosos would bring in plenty of PPV buys in their native Australia, and could sell out a stadium there.
Kambosos says Shakur would need to get up to 140 for him to fight, and he wants to vacate his WBC lightweight title. Shakur is not likely to relinquish that belt because he needs a tool to win the unification against WBA champion Gervonta Davis.
