Sampson Lewkowicz, the promoter of WBC and WBO junior middleweight champion Sebastian Fundora, wants to make a unification fight next against WBA champion Terence Crawford, not a title defense against Errol Spence.
Crawford vs Fundora Would Be Massive
Boxing insider Manouk Akopyan reports that Lewkowicz is “focused” on getting a fight with the undefeated Crawford (41-0, 31 KOs) rather than Spence. It makes sense for Fundora (21-1-1, 13 KOs) to fight Crawford next, as he is highly regarded by His Excellency Turki Alalshikh, and a match between them would make a lot of money for one of the events of the Riyadh Season . .
Turki wants to give Crawford the biggest fight possible, and had hoped to set up a bout against unified super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez. However, it doesn’t seem like it will happen due to the lack of interest of the Mexican star and the high price.
The silver Crawford would make fighting the 6’6″ ‘Towering Inferno’ Fundora won’t be close to what he would get fighting Canelo, but it would still be pretty good. Crawford vs. Fundora will probably bring good numbers on PPV in the United States and be better than his recent fight against the WBA 154-lb champion Israil Madrimov on August 3.
Fighting Spence doesn’t bring the same kind of attention and money as a match against Crawford, who is at the top of his game at 37. Spence’s loss to Crawford last year and 14 months of inactivity hurt its popularity with fans.
Fundora is coming off a 12-round split decision victory over WBO junior middleweight champion Tim Tszyu on March 30, and has finally been able to return to the ring after dealing with injuries from that fight.
“A fight between Sebastian Fundora and Errol Spence continues to leak; promoter Sampson (Lewkowicz) told me that he is only focused on staging a fight for Fundora against Terence Crawford,” said Manouk Akopyan in X about WBC / WBO junior middleweight champion Sebastian ‘The Towering Inferno’ the promoter of Fundora, Sampson Lewkowicz, interest in making a fight with Crawford later, not Errol Spence.
