Teofimo Lopez revealed on social media that he will be trained by Eddy Reynoso. Theo Sr. he will still be training him.
Being trained by Reynoso will allow Teofimo to rub shoulders with Canelo Alvarez. That may not make a difference at this point because Teofimo has acted strangely since his wild fight against Vasily Lomachenko in 2020, and some feel he is no longer compelling.
Reynoso is a good trainer, but he can only do so much. He is not a magician who can take a fading fighter like Teofimo and turn him into a mini Canelo.
Teofimo was at his best when he fought at lightweight and used his size to beat smaller fighters. But since the move up to 140, he has looked trash and should have had a 3-2 record instead of 5-0 since the move. Reynoso will not be able to turn water into wine and make something of Teo. It’s a lost cause/
The erratic behavior of Teofimo
Teofimo is out in left field, absolutely weird, unpredictable, and not someone you can count on to win if faced against a tough enough opponent. His fights with Jaime Ortiz, George Kambosos and Sandor Martin were examples.
Reynoso will have to be a miracle to turn around the career of 27-year-old Teofimo. He has been struggling ever since he moved up to 140 in 2022.
It still looks bad even with Top Rank feeding Teo against the tomatoes. We saw that in Teofimo’s last fight against Steve Claggett on June 29 and in his matches against Jaime Ortiz, Sandor Martin and Pedro Campa. You can conclude that Teofimo is on the slide, and it does not matter that he has Reynoso training him. He has to keep fighting.
Lopez (21-1, 13 KOs) still holds the WBO welterweight title, and hasn’t been in a big fight for many. In addition, he has submitted repeatedly since 2021, and his stock has fallen to the point where he is mostly known by fans for his strange comments.
Is it too late for Teo?
Top Rank still promotes Teofimo, but he is looking to become a free agent. Again, Teofimo last fought in June against fringe contender Claggett and performed terribly, taking punishment in a fight he was expected to win easily. It was anything but easy.
This fight and his bouts against Ortiz and Martin showed that Teofimo was not one of the elite light welterweights. He is a level B guy who should be properly adapted to kkee (his career above the water.

“He’s struggling to find relevance without getting in the ring. He had the opportunity to fight Devin, but you keep saying you want to fight Bud Crawford. That fight is not on the table. Crawford didn’t want to fight, and Gervonta Davis is not on the table for him,” said Bill Haney to Vlad TV on Teofimo Lopez.
“He says things to be relevant. There was a time when Teo did his thing. He did backflips. Il faisait la une des journaux à l’intérieur du ring. We talk more about what he says outside the ring than inside of the ring. I think that’s what hurts.
“He hasn’t had any exciting fights. He doesn’t have anyone on the table that is realistically that he can fight. So, he just got there. Where he learned it, I don’t want to put it, but of course he has an accumulated hatred towards us,” said Bill about Teofimo.
If Teofimo were to fight Devin Haney, it would be interesting, but it probably won’t end well for Teo. Haney is a smart fighter who would outsmart the likes of Sandor Martin and Jaime Ortiz. In any case, the judges gave the tree, but clearly they had the best of Teofimo and he should have won.
Teofimo is hard to beat because of his A-side popularity that still exists, but his career is still sinking because the fans aren’t stupid. They see Teo getting controversial wins repeatedly, and they recognize that he is not someone to get excited about.
