Trainer Jose Benavidez Sr. advises Jaime Munguia not to get a rematch with Bruno Surace after being defeated by him in the sixth round on Saturday night in Tijuana, Mexico on December 14th.

Jose Sr. says Surace (26-0-2, 5 KOs) will be “super motivated” after his win, and could cause another “upset” in the rematch with former WBO junior middleweight champion Munguia (44-2, 35) . KO). Benavidez Sr. Munguia wants to walk away from the loss, live his life, and not take a second fight.

Avoiding Revenge

Jose Sr. feels that Munguia should have finished Surace after leaving him in the second round. He thinks he let him off the hook because he wanted to please the fans. It didn’t seem that way. It looks like Munguia tried to hit him, but changed his mind after the 26-year-old Surace hit him with a massive right hand to the head.

That shot brought Munguia back because it was as tough as the one that knocked him out in the sixth.

According to Salvador Rodriguez of ESPN Knockout, Munguia’s promoters in Zanfer want to activate the rematch clause in his contract with Surace to force a second fight in the first half of 2025.

“I think he was taking his time, trying to look for the perfect shot. I think it should have been Jaime,” said Jose Benavidez Sr. Fight Hub TV when he was asked why Jaime Munguia suffered a loss of matches with Bruno Surace on Saturday night.

“I think (Munguia) was trying to please the people, his fans, and that’s what happened. I think if he had pushed the gas a little more, I think he would have stopped it when he did fell (in round two). He probably thought, “This guy is too easy. I will give my fans a show, and then I can put it out.

“It’s a big mistake that he made. I think he should stop it, and he should go with everything and take things seriously. It’s a little hard. I’ll let him go. I won’t take revenge. I’ll continue with my life and I won’t accept that fight,” Jose Sr. said. when he asked if Munguia should take revenge with Surace.

It would be interesting to know if Jose Sr. he would have had the same attitude to not take the rematch if his son, David Benavidez, was knocked out by Surace. Would you recommend that David not activate the rematch clause if Surace has poleaxed him in the sixth round on Saturday night?

“Now that guy is in his mind. That guy is super motivated, and he showed the world what he could do. You can imagine the motivation that he is now. Actually, he is (Surace) a good fighter. He said really good, and I think we can have another upset,” Jose Sr. said.
