The Chicago White Sox have reached a one-season contract with Mexican outfielder Josh Rojas, the official MLB.com portal reported this Thursday.
The amount of the contract with Rojas, who was paid $3.1 million last season, was not disclosed.
Rojas, who played for the Seattle Mariners, was released last November before going to salary arbitration, which was expected to increase his annual salary by more than $4 million.
The 30-year-old Mexican stands out as a player with above-average defense and ability to operate both infield and outfield.
The Chicago team had the worst record in major league history at 41-121 in a single season, and while Rojas wasn’t classified as a big offensive hitter, he had success during his six-season career. With a .247 average, he’s had good results at Guaranteed Rate Field, the home of the White Sox, where he’s hitting .324, with three doubles, two home runs, eight runs scored and 10 runs scored in nine games.
According to MLB records, during his season with the Mariners, Rojas saw action in 141 games in which he split playing time, defending third base in 131, second base in 11, left field in six, first base in one and pitching in two games.
Rojas, who began his career in the Major Leagues in 2019 with the Arizona Diamondbacks, has appeared in 44 games at shortstop and 43 in right field in his career.
In this tour with the Mariners, he hit .225 with 19 doubles, two triples and eight home runs, totaled 30 extra base hits, totaled 31 runs and scored 48 runs.
Speed ββis an important tool in Rojas’ game, adding 59 stolen bases in 73 attempts and hitting a nearly 81% efficiency percentage when going out to steal a base.
