Katie Taylor could be stripped of her WBC lightweight title by the sanctioning body because she has not defended that belt in two years.
Interim WBC champion Caroline Dubois has been waiting for a crack at the full belt held by 38-year-old Taylor (24-1, 6 KOs) and wants her shot delayed. Taylor holds the Light Welterweight and Light Welterweight belts with the World Boxing Council.
In Taylor’s last fight, she successfully defended her four 140lb belts, defeating Amanda Serrano (47-3-1, 31 KOs) by a 10-round Unanimous Decision on November 15th at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
Taylor’s performance was marred by constant head-to-head clashes with Serrano, which left him a bloody mess. Serrano’s face looked like it had been trampled by an elephant. Not surprisingly, Serrano was furious about the headlines afterward.
“It’s been a long time since (Taylor) defended the lightweight (title). Caroline Dubois is the interim champion … I hope there will be a resolution,” said WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman. Belfastlive.
The belt could be stripped from Taylor if he doesn’t make a quick decision to defend against Dubois or not. Taylor’s promoter Eddie Hearn doubts she will fight again after the Serrano fight.
“I don’t think it’s 100% guaranteed that Katie Taylor will fight again,” said Eddie Hearn.
