David Morrell says the “Mexican Monster” David Benavidez should not be “scared” and apologize before the fight ahead of his February 1 fight at lightweight. Benavidez (29-0, 24 KOs) spoke about his concerns about Morrell’s VADA test.
Desperate measures
Morrell (11-0, 9 KOs) faces interim WBC 175 lb champion Benavidez cook a PED excuse to give his fans to explain “what went wrong” after he loses the fight. If he tells fans he thinks Morrell, 26, was ugly, they’ll be sympathetic and won’t abandon him en masse.
With no excuse to explain defeat, fans will jump on the sinking Benavidez ship, as the mice that left a floundering jar on the high seas. It might be impossible for him to send them back unless he comes up with an excuse they will believe.
Many were willing to give Benavidez a pass for his last fight against Oleksandr Gvozdyk when he said he was battling injuries. No x-rays were shown to verify the injuries, but fans still believed because it was the first time.
I hope Benavidez will show class if he loses instead of talking about his suspicions without any supporting information to prove it.
Cuban Morrell says Benanavidez has fought guys who weren’t on his level throughout his career, but now that he’s facing someone on his level, he’s scared and talks about PEDs to cushion the blow if he is beaten
Benavidez’s insecurity
“He should not be afraid. All his life, he has fought fighters who are not at his level. This is what happens when they are afraid. They start using excuses from everywhere,” said David Morrell to Sean Zittelresponding to the VADA test discussion before his fight on February 1st.
This is the first time in Benavidez’s 12-year pro career that he’s fought anyone in a 50-50 fight, and it’s surprising how he’s stooped to this level to stir up the PED talk. Is it a mind game for Benavidez to gain a much needed advantage against the younger, faster, stronger and more talented Morrell?
You can totally understand why Benavidez would be worried about this fight. If he loses, his dreams of a mega-million fight against Artur Beterbiev vs. Dmitry Bivol 2 rematch will be lost, and he will never get the chance to fight Canelo Alvarez, either. He would be just one of the contenders at 175, fighting in the salt mines, without earning the big money.
