Tyson Fury did essentially nothing during public training today in the ring in Riyadh ahead of his rematch with unified heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk.
The Gipsy King looked and sounded like a grumpy Fallen king, not a happy camper. Fury might not be happy with the many fans who aren’t giving him a chance to win the rematch against Usyk (22-0, 14 KOs) on Saturday night.
So, to repay them, he holds back, does not give of himself, and shows classic passive-aggressive behavior It’s so easy to read Fury.
Minimal movement
Fury’s action today boils down to these four things:
- He entered the ring and took off his jacket
- Put on his gloves
- He took them off
- A few words before leaving the ring
All the fans and media that came out today to watch the training of the former WBC heavyweight champion Fury were left with little to see why he restrained his movement and his behavior.
From Fury’s point of view, it’s understandable that he didn’t want to waste energy working or give anything that Usyk (22-0, 14 KOs) could collect.
Fury is close to 37 years old, and he can’t afford to use up his precious energy during training because he’ll need everything he can to move his huge 6’9″ frame around the ring on Saturday night at the Kingdom Arena.
Silent treatment
It is a sign of an older fighter when they conserve their energy during the last public training sessions the week of their fights. Younger fighters use the time to work hard, impress fans and the media, and stay limber.
Fury saw removed and used this week, after recovering from a tough training camp and a bad fight last May in his loss to Usyk. This fight took a toll on Fury, leaving him in the physically destroyed state we’ve seen this week.
“A lot of pain,” Tyson Fury said when asked after today’s public workout what fans can expect on Saturday night for his fight against Oleksandr Usyk. “Smash and damage.”
“Very hurt,” Fury said when asked by DAZN’s Claudia Trejo if he plans to be shaved for Saturday. “Injury, serious injury. So much damage.”
During the interview, she wanted more from Fury, but she wasn’t willing to give it. At that moment, he he seemed almost childish. It was hard to watch that interview without feeling sorry for Trejo.
Fury couldn’t even make himself speak. You can also read that as a sign that he wants to save his precious energy for the fight because even talking uses up fuel. When you have to have every ounce of strength, talking can take too much out of Fury. From looking at the minimalist approach to training and interviews, you can see now that the loss of Usyk has affected Fury greatly.
Fury didn’t just wipe out like he said. He is mortally wounded, as a shell-shocked soldier Returning from the front line, unable to forget what happened and angry for not giving more of himself during the battle. It is much worse than a soldier mentally dealing with battle fatigue from being bombed. They are the ones who know they should do more, but their nerves fail them.
Serious as a monk
“I see a completely different Tyson Fury. He doesn’t play anymore. We don’t see him smile. This guy has probably done his homework,” Usyk’s promoter Alex Krassyuk said about Tyson Fury while watching him during his day. public workt in the ring today.
“He probably realized that spoiling, spending his energy with the media, and laughing at his training camp is not the best idea. This time, he kept serious like a monk,” said Krassyuk about Fury. “Probably, he will try to make some corrections in his technique and tactics.
“I expect it will be a much more dramatic fight than the first one. Oleksandr Usyk was still under his skin. Tyson tried to do this with Oleksandr, but he had an advantage. He does not speak fluent English. We have a finger in Ukraine. “The bigger the wardrobe, the louder the noise when it falls.”
