Errol Spence will fight WBC/WBO junior middleweight champion Sebastian Fundora in late January at the Cowboy Stadium or training facility in Arlington, Texas.
There is no mention of whether this will be on PPV, but it is likely how it will be broadcast. Despite his recent inactivity and defeat, Spence remains a PPV attraction. Fundora is well known to hardcore boxing fans, and that should be enough for this match to bring a good number on PPV.
Box of Barboza reports that the Spence vs. Fundora will happen at the end of January. Former unified welterweight champion Spence (28-1, 22 KOs) is coming off an 18-month layoff and a KO loss to Terence Crawford when he makes his debut at 154 against Fundora (21-1-1, 13 KOs )
The fight is a do-or-die type of matchup for the 34-year-old Spence, who has had long periods of inactivity due to injuries and a soft life over the past four years. This is a fight that is given to Spence because of his popularity.
It’s also a fight that gives Fundora a good chance to hold on to both of his belts because if he were to fight WBC interim champion Vergil Ortiz Jr, chances are high that he would lose to him. Ortiz Jr. is not as popular as Spence. So, it’s not a marketing struggle for Fundora.
Spence’s loss against Crawford was brutal, and he took some terrible punishment, but his fight against Yordenis Ugas was also tough. Errol has only fought three times since 2020 because he can’t stay healthy.
The 26-year-old, 6’6”, Fundora will have a big size and youth advantage over Spence, and it will be interesting if Errol has enough to win.
If Spence is victorious, that could open the door for a rematch with Crawford if the Nebraska native doesn’t retire. There are many more excellent fights at 154 for Spence if he captures the WBC and WBO belts from Fundora.
