Edgar Berlanga wants Munguia, then Canelo Rematch

Edgar Berlanga believes he can get a rematch against Canelo Alvarez in a year and a half. He says he’s going to beat Jaime Munguia, then capture one of the super middleweight titles, then face Canelo (62-2-2, 39 KOs) for the undisputed title. Berlanga has no interest in fighting Caleb Plant because he thinks a fight between him and Munguia will do big PPV numbers.

It could take more than Berlanga beating Munguia and capture one of the belts for him to get a second fight against Canelo. He may have to beat Caleb Plant, Diego Pacheco and Osleys Inglesias in addition to defeating Munguia to get a rematch with Canelo.

The way Berlanga is talking, he thinks he can take this backdoor route to a second fight against Canelo like he did to get the title shot in the first place. He didn’t beat anyone well during his career, building a record of 22-0.

He was a textbook definition of a fighter with a manufactured record, as he did not need to go through a series of tough fights to earn the title. To take “the bag” from Canelo, Berlanga beat two British fighters, Jason Quigley and Padraig McCory.

He probably never would have gotten the shot if Berlanga hadn’t had to beat good opponents like Plant, Inglesias, Munguia and Pacheco. Canelo didn’t hold against Berlanga that he had never fought good opposition because if he had told him to beat him by fighting some or all of those fighters, he never would have.

Berlanga (22-1, 17 KOs) lost to Canelo by a 12-round unanimous decision on Sept. 14 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The fight wasn’t that close with the judges scoring it 118-109, 117-110 and 118-109.

“I know we can get that rematch in a year and a half, and I know for a fact that I can beat him for sure,” said Edgar Berlanga to Sways Universe about his belief that he will get a rematch against Canelo Alvarez in a year and a half.

It is highly doubtful that Berlanga will ever have a rematch with Canelo, and he will not beat him. He has been greatly outmatched in his fight, and that will not change.

“This was my first world title fight. It was a unification. It could be undisputed,” said Berlanga. “Right now, Caleb (Plant) is on the radar, but right now, I want Munguia. That fight with PPV numbers and the door. He’s a big draw in Mexico. You saw me and Canelo. We just made history Munguia and I will do the same thing,” said Berlanga.

Berlanga may need to fight Plant if Canelo is not surprised by a win for him over Munguai. If Canelo chooses to ignore Berlanga, he needs to keep fighting good opposition until he agrees to fight.

If Berlanga fights Munguia, he’s going to be in a very tough match-up because Jaime is a better fighter offensively than him. Munguia is not Berlanga’s size, but his talent is superior to his, and so is his experience.

“After I beat him, I want that rematch (with Canelo Alvarez). I think we had a great fight. He has a lot of respect for me now,” Berlanga said. “He saw the numbers we did. It was a great fight from the first round to the twelfth round. I really believe he will give me another shot.

“I think I should go out and capture a world title. Like the WBO vacates the WBO or WBA. If I take a title, I believe we can make it happen. Next year is going to be a big year. I’m a future PPV star. PPV King, the face of boxing,” Berlanga said.

I wonder if Berlanga really believes what he says about being a future PPV King and Face of Boxing. If he was that big, he wouldn’t have lost the way he did against Canelo. He had also taken the fight against David Morrell.
