Edgar Berlanga was overwhelmed by admirers on a vacation in Mexico. Adoring fans recognized the former world super middleweight title challenger after his recent bout against Canelo Alvarez.
Fans wanted to take pictures with Berlanga, 27 (22-1, 17 KOs), who went the 12-round distance against superstar Canelo on Sept. 14, losing by unanimous decision with the 118 -109, 117. -110, and 118-109. The performance of the native of Brooklyn, New York showed that a fighter can become famous for being competitive against Canelo and is not defeated.
Berlanga feels he will be the next PPV star in the super middleweight division. He wants to capture a world title and has shown interest in going the IBF route to face the winner of the William Scull vs Vladimir Shishkin bout.
However, the IBF’s 10lb rehydration rule could be a hindrance to Berlanga fighting for that belt, as he rehydrated at 193 lbs for his fight against Canelo Alvarez. It might be physically impossible for Berlanga to keep from rehydrating 20+ lbs after making weight for the 168-lb division.
What Berlanga could do is move up to 175 to make it easier for him to make weight, but he probably won’t match up well against undisputed lightweight champion Artur Beterbiev.
Berlanga’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, recently talked about having him take a tune-up later in his parents’ country, Puerto Rico. He is treated like a superstar here despite not being Puerto Rican. Gabriel Rosado, a 38-year-old, has been mentioned as a potential opponent for the implementation of Berlanga.
Berlanga said he wants to fight Jaime Munguia next, and feels that a fight between them would make big numbers on PPV. He mentions that it would be a different kind of Mexico vs. Puerto Rico fight. Beyond Munguia, Berlanga wanted to fight Jermall Charlo, who has fought only once in the last three years and passed his prime at 34 years old.
