WBA lightweight champion Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis vs. Lamont Roach has now been moved to March 1 on PBC on Prime Video pay-per-view.

Boxing Insider Keith Idec reports that the new “targeted date” for the Tank-Roach encounter is 3/1. Tank (30-0, 28 KOs) wants the fight to still take place at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas, but there is a basketball game scheduled for that night. They have to look for another destination for this match, which is still moving.

PBC will decide whether to find a place in Texas or move to where it makes sense on the East Coast in Baltimore or Washington, DC The fanbase for Tank Davis and Roach (25-1-1, 10 KOs) are located in that area with this struggle at the regional level.

Possible reasons for the movement of Tank-Roach

  • Zero fan interest in the fight: People don’t want to see Tank cherry pick another opponent after doing so for a solid 11 years. Fans want to see 50-50 fights involving Tank, and they haven’t seen him in a pick ’em match during his career.
  • Need for a strong supporting cast: It takes time to find an undercard solid enough to get fans to overlook the poor main event between Tank and the Light Roach.
  • Additional time required to promote: The choice of the little-known Roach means that he will need more time to promote so that the fans are interested enough to want to pay $75.99 to order the card on Prime Video PPV. Roach is not a great interview, and neither is Tank Davis. None of these guys possess charisma, which will make it almost impossible to create enough interest to make the order of the fans. Ideally, PBC should scrap the whole idea of this fight and start over by picking someone who can beat Tank.

The fans don’t want to see this fight because Roach has NEVER beaten any high level opposition, is a weak puncher, and lives at 130, where he is seen as a card champion.

The Tank Davis vs. Lamont Roach fight was originally scheduled for December 14th, but was moved to January. Now, it is tentatively scheduled for February 1st. What a mess!

No interest in this fight

It’s not a fight that the rest of the United States is interested in paying to watch on PPV. They want to see Tank fight quality fighters who have at least a 40% chance to win, not a weak puncher with only a 1% shot to shake Tank.

Jamel Herring beat the 29-year-old Roach in 2019, and he has no wins against talented opposition. Roach captured his WBA super featherweight belt last year, defeating former KO victim Hector Garcia via a 12-round split decision on November 25, 2023.

The David Benavidez vs. David Morrell lightweight fight will not be placed on the undercard of the Tank-Roach card. It makes sense because it’s too big a fight to be placed on the undercard of that albatross.
