Gervonta Davis’ title defense of his WBA lightweight belt against Lamont Roach is rumored to be moved to the David Benavidez vs. David Morrell card on January 25 in Las Vegas.
Tank (30-0, 28 KOs) was originally supposed to defend against super featherweight Roach (25-1-1, 10 KOs) on December 14 at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas. However, due to location issues, it was moved from that date.
Boxing Scene reports that Tank-Roach has been moved to share the card with the Benavidez-Morrell fight on January 25th. It is unclear which fight will headline the card. People are waiting to see Benavidez and Morrell fight. You can’t say the same thing about Davis’ fight against Roach. That match should never have happened.
The reaction of the fans to the fight of Tank against Roach was very negative, making it risky that this fight takes place without an exceptional head support.
It would make more sense to have a bout between interim WBC light heavyweight champion Benavidez (29-0, 24 KOs) and WBA “regular” champion Morrell (11-0, 9 KOs) to be the main event and fight minor among Tank. and Roach be the co-function. PBC will likely put Tank in the main event, but sell the Benavidez-Morrell fight on the side.
Why Tank-Roach Could Be Moved to Benavidez vs. Morrell event:
- Attract more interest: Having Davis vs. Roach and Benavidez vs. Morrell share the same card on Jan. 25 will give more fans to watch. If the idea works, the PPV numbers should increase. Tank and Benavidez shared the same card at PBC on Prime Video PPV earlier this year on June 15th, and they brought a good number as well.
- Cost reduction: Putting both fights on the same card on January 25th will lower costs because the two matches will be combined. It would have been cute to have the low appeal fight between Tank and Roach in its own event.
Some fans believe that the real reason for moving the Davis-Roach fight to the Benavidez-Morrell card is the lack of appeal for this fight. There isn’t enough interest from people to see Tank Davis fight Roach to have his own date without a strong headliner support fight to help attract PPV buys.
