2020 Olympic silver medalist heavyweight Richard Torrez Jr. (11-0, 10 KOs) defeated overmatched veteran Joey Dawejko (28-12-4, 16 KOs) in a one-sided contest, winning by fifth-round disqualification on Friday night. at the Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, Arizona.
Dawejko kept losing his mouth, which caused the referee to lose patience with him and disqualify him in the fifth round of their co-feature fight. He went down four times in the fourth after being tagged hard by the 25-year-old Torrez Jr.
The referee twice welcomed Dawejko’s pints in the fourth round and warned him that he would DQ him if he lost again. Sure enough, a minute into the fifth, Dawejko lost his mouth after being hit hard by Torrez Jr. The referee stopped the fight at 2:02 of the fifth.
It wasn’t much of a fight as southpaw Torrez Jr marked the out-of-shape Dawejko at will with shots, connecting with some big punches in each round. In the fourth, Dawejko was bleeding from the nose and looked like he didn’t want to be there. He didn’t throw many punches and only took big hits.
After twice losing points in the fourth, Dawejko came alive in the fifth round and pinned Torrez Jr. several times with big right hands that had the crowd cheering loudly. However, just when the fight was getting interesting, the referee stepped in and stopped it after Dawejko lost his mouth for the fifth time.
