Bill Haney suggests a big fight announcement for Devin

Bill Haney says he has “Great News” quickly on his son, Devin Haney’s next fight. Devin (31-0, 15 KOs) has been on the bench since his loss seven months ago, and it looks like he might finally be back in action.

Papa Haney will look foolish if Devin’s next opponent is a tomato can or a washed-up old veteran, like many of the guys he built his 31-0 record on. No one is expecting much from Haney (31-0, 15 KOs) for his comeback, given the thrashing he took from Ryan Garcia on April 20 in Brooklyn, New York.

Devin needs someone like Oscar Duarte to show that he can handle a puncher without being repeatedly sent to the ground. That’s unrealistic, though. Billy isn’t crazy enough to let Devin fight Duarte and watch him get destroyed.

“Working on something BIG,” said Bill Haney on X.

To help build Kingry’s rematch, Haney needs to fight someone like Alberto Puello, Arnold Barboza Jr., or Richardson Hitchins. None of these fights have any chance of happening.

Haney shouldn’t lose because he had the mega-money rematch with Ryan Garcia in 2025, and they don’t want to waste that money. However, Devin has to fight someone to get the taste out of the fans’ mouths, who can’t forget the image of him getting knocked down three times by Kingry.

My prediction is that Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero will be chosen over Haney. That guy seems right up his alley. Rolly (16-2, 13 KOs) is flawed, has lost two of his last four fights, and is a good trash-talker. Romero would help sell a fight between him and Devin on PPV. Boxing fans ate it up.

It would be a mistake for former two-division world champion Devin, 26, to face another big puncher after what Garcia did for him. Even a former card champion like Rolly would be a high-risk opponent for Haney, and he might regret fighting him.
